"Master Merchants," I say, "will this calf be acceptable as an offering? I wish to offer it on behalf of a Sacrifice, the sweetest who ever vanished beneath the waves."

The priests are astonished and come forward, raised somewhat out of their despair. "How did you find such a perfect and beautiful sacrifice? Of course this is acceptable to Galadrin!"

"It is a signal grace I have been granted," I said. "I found it in the palace." This is perfectly true. I am not going to mention the Queen, however, as that could potentially draw attention to her. "I needed this, and Galadrin must have permitted me to find it, that I might offer it to him."
(Is Aethyl joining in?)

"Galadrin bless you and your efforts!" the priest says, taking the calf up to the altar. "Now what specifically are you praying for? You know of a Sacrifice who went beneath the waves?"

"Yes," I say, and tears come to my eyes. "I am praying that, in Galadrin's mercy, his waves will return what they took, and that I will see my Iritari again." My voice breaks. I know that this is too much to ask. Who am I to the Sea-Lord? I am no priestess. But I will follow Galadrin forever if he grants mercy to Iritari!

Though they say nothing with your mouths, their faces say it all: sacrifices do not return. At least no one has heard of one returning. As far as the priests are concerned, Iritari is gone. How could he survive beneath the waves, having been given to the Ithacul? Your hope is foolish. But they say nothing, instead making the sacrifice of the calf as you have instructed.

I know it; I knew it when he was pulled overboard. But my heart yearns, and I resolve that even if I cannot see him with my mortal eyes, when I go to Alaxton's halls, I will seek out Iritari to spend eternity with him.

In the early dawn hours before their departure, Drusinicus wields his new short sword with skill and efficiency. Not wanting to wake the others, he muses on what adventures lay before the group.
