"Why would you defend such a man? Oh, and I had no idea you are a lawyer!"

"You know how Magister Judal lifted my curse, yes? Well I wanted to provide a suitable offering to Nistaran Sunlord. Giving money seemed disingenuous since" I gesture at my townhouse indicating my wealth "so I offered a week of free legal service. Although I'm afraid I didn't do much good. I was able to get a centurion punished for abusing a prostitute and brothel owner. My other two opportunities were less auspicious. The aforementioned legnionnaire and the son of my poor mentor's quadmate. As for the legionnaire, I was hoping I might be able to get through to him and change his path."

"Get the legionnaire to change his path? The lawyer playing priest, eh? But what about the son of your mentor? What did he do?"

I stare into my cup and sift through my confused thoughts. I've never met someone like Danal, a man who desires a certain outcome but won't do what's necessary to achieve that end. I shake my head, sigh, and drain my cup. "Landlord!" I order another drink. So Danal hates us now? I thought he'd approve of what we'd done with Arius. Politics is a bloody game, and if your enemy is killing your allies, you have to retaliate, right? You gotta hit back harder so that your opponent can't hit again. That's what Anak and I did, and now Danal won't return our messages. I wonder what will become of the librarian in these tumultuous times.

(Responding to the question before the last post and answering prior to the Ral's being killed) "The son of my mentor's quadmate, Secundus Ral the younger, attempted to engage me to defend him against charges related to the planting of a falsified scroll in the library. This, of course, was the scroll that they asked me to plant. No one else would touch the case. I assume they thought I was obliged to defend him or else they might try to implicate me in the conspiracy. I went straight to the chief magistrate and told him most of my involvement to make sure he heard it from me first."

I think but do not say, The man turns honesty into a vice.
