"None. The accounts of encounters with doppelgangers has been considered apocryphal because none had been seen in centuries. So now we Sentinels are having to go over the old tomes and consider them historical accounts!"

"This is bad news indeed. We already were dealing with duplicates of ourselves and those we cared for and now there may be such of more nefarious aims. Jund, do you know if these creatures gain the knowledge of those they mimic or just their form?"

"Good question, Shepherd!" I consult my compendium. "My notes say nothing about it. I sure hope not, or that would make their mimicry perfect! They'd be able to fool their mothers."

"Where did you encounter this creature? And what did you do with the remains?"

"The wagoner who drove us around and dropped us off ended up being the doppelganger. As he was driving away, I happened to see him turn into Assentus! So the legionnaire went one way, and I went another, and we intercepted the wagon and slaughtered the monster! We left his corpse in the street, so I can only assume the town guard cleaned up our mess."

"If you come across another one and slay it, try to get me a piece of the remains. Just a finger or a toe."

"I cut off its head! I should have brought that to you. I did show it to Assentus and say, 'Makes you think, doesn't it?'." I raise my cup to Kestal. "Very well, Shepherd! I will bring you doppelganger body parts!" I drink more wine and then stare at Kestal. "I see you openly wear a Vadal dagger on your belt! It is the last thing I would have expected to see a Skenje nobleman wear. Can you tell me about it?"

I smile fondly as I touch the dagger. "This dagger used to contain the spirit of a Vadal warrioress by the name of Lovisa of the Blind Snow. She was being threatened by bandits and killed herself rather than being despoiled by them. Her spirit then bound herself to me but I ultimately disappointed her and she moved on beyond the Gate."

I raise my glass to her memory. "A spirited one, that Lovisa."
I take a sip, then widen my eyes and set down my glass with a faint smile.
"No pun intended, of course!"

"You had a Blind Snow warrioress? And you disappointed her? How?" I ask only because he brought it up.

"Well, she was a spirit and she perceived me to be formidable because I had shepherded several wraiths beyond. I did not quite understand Vadal custom and that she intended that we be bonded. She wished to use the body of my female quad-mate to bond with me. I would not allow this without the lady's consent and Lovisa saw this as a betrayal. Truth be told, she is the one who forced the destruction of the onyx box that contained the spirit we're so concerned about."

"How strange! It seems you got entangled in the passions of a Blind Snow woman!" I cannot help but laugh. "She would have eaten you alive. No offense, Shepherd. I am sure you wield religion and law with great skill, but a Vadal woman of the Blind Snow is like a half-mad wild mare, impossible for a Skenje nobleman to tame."

I smile wryly "Yes, as I found out much to my embarrassment." Turning more serious "However, she may be the spark that ignited this flame of dopplegangers. That is, if it is true that they came because of the wraith in the onyx box."

"I am confused! The lady-ghost broke the box because... you say she 'forced' it. Was she angry with you?"
