"Cousin Cian!" I say, grabbing the hand with the ring on it. "How dare you! You took this from the High Priest's body--and that without any respect for Nistaran himself?"

“Cousin”, I say sternly, “I am a lot of things but neither am I a thief nor a disrespector of the gods.. I searched him in the hopes of finding some information and this was all he had on him. I was going to return it to his temple but everything went to hell. I am merely holding on to it until I can return it to an appropriate representative of Nistaron.” Turning my attention to the ring, “it’s beautiful isn’t it. If only it could tell us something.”

I look at Cousin Cian with a careful eye. "I would never think you would just take something without purpose, but you made no secret of how you felt about that particular priest." I shake my head. "And after the way you murdered those gladiators, cousin, I was ... concerned. I am glad to think otherwise, and I am glad, too, that you were planning to return it to the Order of Nistaran." I look at the ring. "I know a little about such things. Would you like me to look it over? I might be able to learn something from it."

“Of course. It would be wonderful if it could give us some clue.”

(Rolled Spellcraft. Rolled a 2! Made the check by 24!)
"Hmm," I say, examining it closely.

It is a powerful ring that renders the wearer immune to being held or bound in any way, either physically or magically. (ring of free action)
Mairwyn, you cannot help but feel shocked at the power of this item.

I marvel. "It is a ring of powerful protection," I say. "It renders the wearer immune to being held or bound in any way, either physically or magically. No doubt, it is an important relic of the Order of Nistaran."

"Wow, I didn't realize you had such powers! I will take very good care of this ring until we can return it to someone from the order."
"So tell me Mairwyn, where are we headed? You seem to have struck up a good relationship with the ships captain and crew. I am at a loss for what to do next. Should we seek out advice from Ravenswood? My only thought is to seek out someone in my order but I don't know what good that might do."

"Also, please tell the captain I am capable of assisting should they need anything. I can read the weather well and can provide navigation help."

"I am sure that the captain will know to ask you should any difficulties arise," I say. "But I can remind him. As for where we are headed, it is Arinport, the Zenji capital, and one of the greatest ports in the world. His Highness is a Zenji Prince, and he is returning to his own people in their hour of need. As for where to go after that, Ravenwood is likely the best place, yes. I will be thinking of anyone who might know what could have become of the sun..."

As we are all resting in the palace of Prince Shak-amen, Mairwyn goes to seek out Cousin Cian.
"Cousin?" I ask, using the privilege of relations to simply make myself at home in his room. I sit down, and I look at him seriously.
"I have been noticing, Cousin, that you seem ... almost to not only have no care for your life, but almost to be courting death. I do not," I quickly add, "pretend to know anything about the merits of chaos or about the way that fits into Abrexa's worship or even anything about the divine power of that relic you have received. But what I have seen is that, ever since the ... the Sacrifice, you have seemed to court death. If it is that you feel ... guilty for surviving when the Ithacul took Iri, surely, surely that ought to make you tender your life more carefully? Ought not you to make his sacrifice mean something? I do not, of course, mean to recommend cowardice, nor do I know anything about the intricacies of chaos, given how orderly magic must be. So I do not mean to suggest that you should either become a coward or even that you should embrace order. But that you should have a care for your own life. Exercise prudence, Cousin. Do not seek death. I know well the temptation..." I sigh. "After Iri..."

"What a beautiful dress cousin! Our host has been most generous!" I say by way of greeting. Turning more serious: "I can understand why you might be concerned Mairwyn. I do hold my life cheaply but neither do I hold it too dearly. If Abrexa has taught me anything from watching the wind, waves and tide it is that the world is always in flux. Sometimes the greatest treasures wash up on shore or are blown to our island from afar. Other times, the greatest destruction comes upon those same waves and winds. Abrexa asks us to embrace it all and I as a servant must also somewhat embody that uncertainty. I have seen great good come about even from great destruction. I fear too much order and sameness dulls our sensitivity and appreciation for life. I do not wish to die but I will follow my instincts and do what I feel is right moment to moment and trust that my fate is in Abrexa's hands."
"I do not carry guilt for surviving the Ithacul but my heart said in that moment that it wasn't right and I didn't listen. So I will adjust my future from that experience. The status quo of Galadrin is one of the things I'm thinking of when I think of a need for change. The observance of the Sacrifice seems old and stale and not right. And that is just one small exammple. In truth, the sun's disappearance does concern me but at the same time I can see the possibilities for change and growth through this trial. I just hope Abrexa sees fit to allow me to see the resolution of it."
"Thank you very much for your concern cousin. I have no death wish. In fact, I feel like I need to be around to protect you and Aethyl. I will do my best to stick around." I tousle her hair affectionately which I know she will hate.

I flinch and pull back. "Cousin!" I say reproachfully. "It took me ages to get that style right." Then I stick out my tongue at him. "I am glad that you are not courting death, Cousin Cian. As for the rest, I confess that as a mage, I have grown to appreciate order, so I will leave the religious questions to you... I am glad, too, that you plan to be around to look after Aethyl and me. We ... probably need the protection more than you can know."

"Thank you, Cousin. But I cannot think that Abrexa would will to take you from us."
