Sentinels are a Kailos-specific class. Their role is to guard caravans throughout Norivea.
All Sentinels are male. They are chosen from boyhood by the Headmaster of the Academy of Ravenwood. They are brought up at Ravenwood, parallel to the mages, but never permitted to interact with them until after they have both graduated.
Sentinels all have a sense of magical sensitivity, though no magic within them. It is speculated, though only the Headmaster would know for certain, that Sentinels are born from lines of mages, but in them magic is twisted inward rather directed outward. It is this "build-up" that permits the Sentinel to send out that power in waves that can be sensed by monsters and other beasts.
Each Sentinel is taught at the Academy for a decade, then sent out as a journeyman to study with a Sentinel in the field for another five years. Only then is he permitted to call himself a Sentinel.
Upon receiving his title, a Sentinel is then offered a position by Grorekathi or Jarad caravans. There are more caravans than Sentinels, so there is always a need for them.
XP: as paladins
HD: as fighter
Saves: as fighter
Thac0: as fighter
Ability score requirements and prime requisite: as rangers
Proficiencies: as fighter
Bonus prof: tracking (as rangers), brewing, herbalism
Class skill: brew potion, each once per day (3rd level - potion of extra healing; 5th level - potion of fire breath; 7th level - potion of speed). Potions brewed for and by Sentinels are poisonous to anyone else.
Sentinels can "turn" low-INT and non-sentient monsters/beasts as a paladin would turn undead, though he does not destroy them.
Sentinels are immune to all toxins, venoms, and poisons, and with successful Herbalism and Brewing checks can neutralize any poison, toxin, or venom.
All Sentinels are male and are trained at Ravenwood Academy, though they are not mages nor have spellcasting ability. There they undergo their magical attunement to monsters.
At 4th level, a Sentinel may call his mount as per the paladin ability.
Each graduated Sentinel carries with him a basic "monstrous compendium" to which he can add over the course of his life.
Sentinels are immune to fear.
