I think, Well, it depends on what I have to work with. If you've got the talent, I can mold it. But if you've got no natural charisma or the ability to express yourself, it'll be hopeless. But I say, "I'll do what I can. First you mention be mindful of two things: confidence and projection." And I spend some time demonstrating how a speech is more effective if the speaker is confident and projects his voice, but in a manner that is engaging and not bullying.

"I see. How's this?" I give a short speech on the on the importance of Abundance and how a government must provide for all in a society even those who are not noble or wealthy. "Like that?"

(Roll that Cha+Expression to see how well you took on board Caoimhghin's lessons)

Your speech does not fail, but you definitely need work!

"Not bad for a first try. Are you considering going into politics, then? Speeches before the Senate and all that?"

"I think that Caoimhghin might agree that, while anyone can improve their native talents, one must always work within one's limits. Anyone may learn to sing or play better, but if one hasn't an ear for pitch, a feel for rhythm, then the best training will, pardon the expression, fall flat. Between us," I say, indicating Caoimhghin, "you will have at least two who can judge and refine your skills. But you should first consider your ultimate goal, and whether, failing to achieve it in the one way, you have other options for achieving it, and the willingness to choose from among them. Few are willing to go so far. Are you?"

"I appreciate your candor Anak Sa'ir and I would ask that you never dissemble with me. I am not sure what my options are at this point. To your question Caoimhghin, I don't know about jumping fully into politics but I'm realizing that good arguments and knowledge are not enough. I have to somehow learn how to teach people how to desire virtue. To call them onward towards lives that embody the gift of the virtues that the gods have given us. I need allies in what I intend to do but knowledge of the law is not enough. I must persuade."
"I would very much appreciate it if you two could judge and refine my skills or to let me know they are not there. If they are not, I will find another way. I would, of course, not presume you would do this for free. Consider me an amateur coming to you for training for the stage. How might I compensate you?"

I laugh. "Teach people how to desire virtue? Why didn't you just become a priest, then?" I glance around at nothing in particular. "From what I've seen of Nirrion so far, virtue isn't on the minds of the people."
A bit of poetry comes to mind... "Virtue that transgresses is but patched with sin, and sin that amends is but patched with virtue."

"Exactly. And I don't know if we can return to the ways of the old Republic unless the people understand where the stability of our society comes from. You see, we are prosperous because we came together under principles that honored all people and taught them how to work together. I worry that the path we are on will tear all of that apart. The prosperity we enjoy will become tyranny. Power and wealth will consolidate and misery will be the norm rather than the exception. Such things have happened before. It's in the histories. We are at the crest of the wave of our past but to continue as we are means the wave will crash and crush many." Laughing "Perhaps I should be a priest."
"Tell me friends, what do you believe in?"

I sit back, rather at a loss. The only thing that comes to my mind is, "Are you saying greed and oppression didn't exist during the days of the Republic? Was it some kind of utopia?"

"I wouldn't go that far but the Republic was what enabled us to build what we have today. Stability, work, prosperity. Of course there have always been those that have taken advantage but I fear it is getting worse. I fear that those in power are are amassing more power and wealth to the ruin of society. The difference now is that lip service is paid to virtues but no one seems to really practice them. I cannot believe that the traditions we have were always built on air and wishes."

"So...what you want is a little bit of Republican corruption with a little bit of Republican freedom than a tyranny with no freedom at all?"

I laugh "I think you can agree that the latter no one wants. Of course I would prefer no corruption and a civilization where virtue is served completely and perfectly but I am not totally naive. I can't speak to the fate of everyone and everything but I feel it is my part to bring as much benefit to the world as I can. If the gods could hear and answer your prayer, how would you structure society?"

I shake my head slowly and spread my hands helplessly. "You might as well ask a dolphin how it would prepare an omelet! I've not the faintest clue how to answer your question. Structure society? Well... Elunia works well, I think. We're ruled by individual hereditary chiefs, not elected representatives, and we are the freest of all men."
