I set down my cup of wine and sit up. "Let me get this straight: there was a conspiracy to bring back the old republic, but your honesty on the Senate floor stopped it. So one of the conspirators killed himself for (reasons), and his quadmate, Ral, blames you. So Ral cursed you. Like, for real cursed you. You got it removed by Magister Judal. Why isn't Ral being detained? Surely cursing a nobleman such as yourself is a crime?"

I laugh. "Well, when you put it together like that! The problem is that there is no proof of who ordered the curse. Magister Judal is looking at the curse tablet and might have more information." (Is cursing someone a crime? It seems like it might be something that many people might not take seriously. It doesn't seem quite like hiring a thug to knife someone or poisoning someone. Or is it in this culture?)

"I could identify who wrote it, but my evidence wouldn't be admissible in court." I wink at Danal and Anak-Sa'ir.

(It would be criminal if one could prove that the priest involved were a real priest of Anthiel, and if it could be proven who did it. Which you all currently have no way of proving, and Caoimhghin is correct that his magical evidence would not be admissible in court.)

"Depending on what Magister Judal finds, would you mind making an assessment of the tablet Caoimhghin? It would ease my mind to know who commissioned or created it."

"Easy. But like I said, there's no way my findings will hold up in court."

"Yes, I understand and I thank you for being willing. Gods below I hate politics!"

"Then don't engage with it."

Jax shakes his head, but says nothing. His gaze, however, is eloquent.

I laugh at Jax's response. "I'm doing my best not to but to your earlier point I find myself entangled."

I smile. "Then let me emphasize my original point: only as tangled as we make them. Young Judal is not entangled."

Jax nods sagely, but says nothing.

"So tell me Caoimhghin and Anak Sa'ir, how goes the play? Regale me with tales of the stage and Desolation Row."

"We meant to run 'Visions of Tarisceana' until the end of the month, but Marcellus says it'll run to the end of the year, if we wish. And we do indeed wish, for I'll not say 'no' to more fame and more amphions!"

I raise my glass again "Well done and congratulations! I am so glad to hear that the run is doing so well. You'll be moving north of the river before long and won't be able to walk down the street without being accosted by adoring fans."
