I gesture helplessly. "I cannot give advice if I don't know who is supposed to die."

"Ah, apologies." I look around to make sure no one is too nearby. "It's Consul Belamal."

"Is he still in the city? He's the one who wants to make himself king, right? Whereas Val wanted to maintain the status quo?"

"Yes, that is correct. You may not remember but you met him at the cena that my brother held with the Consuls. Val is dead. And counting bridge stones for another fortnight. And his son is dead as well. The General Risemal is mopping up his army now."

"A consul is no normal man. He is a leader and symbol of the hegemony of Nirrion. I don't think murdering him is a good idea. Not only is it wrong to raise our hands against lawful authority, but the unstable effect it would have on the people..."

"Well, it's been done once already." I smile but with absolutely no mirth. "Perhaps he could be persuaded? I think he has designs on the throne for himself though so it might not be possible."

"The situation is a complex and delicate one. I can think of one simple solution, however... bloodbond the Consul to either Anak or me. Then he'll go along with what we want."

"That could work. Does that mean that he would be a mere puppet in all things or just in matters in which you take interest?"

"He would have a will of his own on mundane matters, of course, but when it comes to policy, he would do whatever his vampire Lord says."

"Interesting idea. I assume he would still be mortal? Who should do this?"

"He would still be mortal, and as long as he received blood at least once a month, he'd not age and share in a measure of his domitor's immortal strength. If he stopped receiving the blood after three drinks, he would live a normal life, but he'd be enslaved anyway." I think a moment. "To be honest, if we are going to go this route, I think I should be the one to chain the Consul's will."

"Do you have the patience for such a task? It seems like a big commitment to enthrall him and make sure he stays that way. I think perhaps we should learn more about the political landscape before we do this. Even with him out of the way, how many more senators might still oppose this?"

"I have the patience. I'm not as I used to be. More focused, more determined. Besides, Judal is my friend, and for him I would do much. I agree, though, that we need to know more about the political landscape... and the best way to map it is to enthrall the Consul, have him speak in favor of Judal, and see whose jaws hit the floor."

"Not a bad idea. I wonder if brother Lucius could get me into the Senate during some debate on things like this and I could touch the minds of some present."
