It does not take me long to determine that we will need to take a lifeboat down there. "I cannot learn more from here," I say to the captain. "But reason tells me that this was not done by the agents of the dragon, for it had been, they would have had the chest, and they would have killed you outright. This leaves a natural danger, for which we must prepare."
I smile as I press Iritari's fingers.
"Iritari my love, I will be going down in a lifeboat. Would you like to go with me?" For what harm can the sea ever do to a Sacrifice?
I glance at Aethyl, suspecting he will follow, for he does not like for me to rush unattended into danger.
"Please lower us over the side," I say to the captain. "And how big was the chest we are searching for?"

Aethyl, who has been scanning about in all directions (Observation, just in case - rolled a 6) since seeing the wreckage of the lifeboat, at last approaches Mairwyn and Iritari as they prepair to descend.
"Cousin, beware. Something is amiss with this lifeboat, and in its current condition it should go nowhere." He catches her eye and continues. "Your cousin Aethyl is not yet aboard."

I laugh. "Then join us, Cousin! I am always more confident of success when you are with us."

Rajit steps forward. "I will go with you as well. If it is some creature of nature I may be able to calm things down." Things that might be useful in this situation: Alertness (based in nature), Animal Lore, Tracking and in the case of an encounter with an animal, Animal Empathy.

You all pile into the lifeboat and row cautiously into the cove and after only a brief, silent investigation Rajit understands that a monstrous octopus attacked and destroyed the other lifeboat, and there is also evidence that the second mate was dragged to his death. Being a highly intelligent creature, the octopus, Rajit surmises, took the chest with it.

"Then we ought to go after it," I say. "Galadrin has graced me with the ability to breathe water, and I can share that with those whom I touch. As for light, my Iritari has some always." I lift his hand and kiss it, the one where the little silver bracelet rests.

Then I ask Rajit, "Will the octopus be likely to have remained close by? Are you able to call it or communicate with it in some fashion?"

"I cannot. Through the blessing of Abrexa and Alaxton I can locate it or make someone invisible to it. If it confronts us I may be able to calm it." I attempt to use Animal Lore to read the situation here. Was it protecting its area, hungry, something else? [failed the roll by 3]

Rajit, you can glean no more of the movements and purposes of the octopus as you could before.

I then say, "I am going below then. There is nothing for it but to look ourselves." I cast water breathing on myself and Iritari (and on anyone else who wants to go with us).
"To the Sealord I commit myself," I say, and I go overboard, hand in hand with my Iritari.
My thoughts whirl back to the moment when the Ithacul took my Iritari, as the sweet Sacrifice, beneath the waves, and I suddenly pull him in for a kiss beneath the water.

Rajit will accompany.

Then Rajit has water breathing on from me.
What do I see down here, by the light of Iritari's bracelet?

You see the half-devoured remains of the unfortunate but brave sailor who kept the dragon cult from getting its hands on the mysterious chest... and you see that chest nearby, lodged among dying coral.

I am too overwhelmed by the sight of the dead sailor to notice anything else. (Failed, but not botched.)
