Rajit is the one to spy the hidden movements of the beast. Its monstrous beak is visible for a moment before it retreats deeper into the shadow underneath the rock its hiding in.

Rajit attempts to communicate that Mairwyn and Iritari should fetch the chest. He will stay between the creature and them and attempt to intervene should it approach.

I follow Rajit's instruction and press forward toward the chest. I retain hold of Iritari's hand as often as I can, for I do not like the idea of him being underwater and away from me...

Mairywn lays hands on the chest, with Iritari there swimming beside her, but at that moment the giant octopus darts forward, though it does not move directly to the chest, since Rajit swims between them.

I clutch the chest to me and gesture upward. This monstrous sea creature will surely overcome us if we stay beneath the water.

I attempt to use animal empathy (save vs. rods @ -2) to move it one category in our favor. Categories on a scale are: Frightened, Friendly, Indifferent, Cautious, Threatening, Hostile (Ranger's Handbook pages 22 and 23) **edit, that should be save at a -3**

(Failed its save.) The giant octopus' tentacles sway with the undulations of the water, and it makes no move to reclaim its stolen treasure. Rajit, you sense that it is in no way your friend, but for the moment is floats there confused, unwilling to risk itself for the chest.

Rajit will back away slowly maintaining a position in between the creature and the two companions. He maintains a non-threatening posture and emphasizes that they are leaving.

Your ranger skills keep the octopus at bay, and as you regain the ship and see that your diving party is safely aboard, too, you realize that a deep sea giant octopus would have never attacked a man, and certainly not one so close to shore, were it not for the current state of the world and its seas. Surely this beast is starving, like so many creatures on Kailos.

Do we have anything on board that might serve as food for it?

Yes, there is some brined beef that the octopus could eat, but only because it's starving. It would obviously prefer more native game like seafood, but the Aglaia has none aboard. Beef, lentils, cheese, and the like is what they have.

Rajit will ask whoever is in charge of the foodstuffs if he might buy a haunch of brined beef or trade for it.

Though you are met with puzzlement, you are not denied this request, especially since it is your group that has freed the Aglaia. You drop the meat into the dark water, and there is brief splashing as the food is seized and dragged beneath the waves.
But a problem arises aboard ship, for there is talk that the chest should be opened. "For did not four of our friends die for this? And was not our captain taken and beaten for the sake of this chest? I say it belongs to us now by rights!" says one of the sailors, and three agree with him.

Rajit takes a seat on the chest, spear in hand. Not threateningly but uncompromisingly. He's hoping that Aethyl's silver tongue, Mairwyn's conviction and Drusinicus' powerful presence will help out here.

To buy some time, he formally (and somewhat slowly) introduces himself to the crew including the names of all his forebears.
